ESDO is an independent and non-for-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of bio-diversity, through working to achieve environmental and social justice. ESDO raises critical environmental awareness amongst the people of various regions in Bangladesh, and as our name suggests, we assist communities to achieve self-reliant and eco-friendly lifestyles through our capacity building initiatives. Since the formation of ESDO in 1990 we have helped 150,000 people in three rural communities become more conscious of the importance of conserving and rehabilitating the environment.

ESDO represents our environment by influencing positive change in national policy through our awareness-raising and research initiatives. Since 1990 ESDO has been successful in initiating and encouraging a Nation-wide anti-polythene campaign and was the principle force in pressuring the Government in 2002 to announce a complete ban on the sale and manufacture of polythene (plastic) bags in Bangladesh.

Lawacherra Rain Forest

There are a number of pristine wildlife areas in Bangladesh that have been carefully preserved for the sake of the plants and animals that live here. The Lawacherra Rain Forest is one such place. The forest is home to a fantastic variety of plants, birds and animals and is considered to be of great ecological importance. What a treat to see gibbon apes as they leap and climb from tree to tree. These white-faced, diminutive apes are incredibly fascinating to watch. Birds such as bee-eaters, strikingly colorful parrots and owls can also be spotted in the tree-tops – in fact, this is a bird-watchers paradise. If you cast your gaze downward, you may be fortunate enough to spot wild chicken, squirrels and deer. Some visitors have even spotted leopards and pythons as they bask in the little patches of sun! Botanists will be happy to note that the incredibly rare Chloroform tree can be found here – the only one in Asia. There is also plenty of other vegetation in the area as the hilly terrain is just covered with a variety of plants.

OUR LATEST PROJECTS
E Waste Management

ESDO has begun a project to research the effects of electronic waste on the environment and public health in Bangladesh. We aim to bring awareness to this increasingly hazardous problem, ideally resulting in government intervention.

Lead in Paint

In 2010 ESDO initiated a project to bring exposure and to advocate for change in the lead content of paints produced in this country.

We have conducted press briefings and will continue over the course of this year to push for legislative change and to encourage paint producers to reduce paint lead levels independently.

Mercury Containing Products

ESDO has been working for some time to bring exposure to the dangers of mercury in products in the healthcare and other industries.

Currently there is no safe method of disposal for mercury containing products in Bangladesh and ESDO hopes to advocate for a legislative framework for an adequate storage method.
